The Church calls us to celebrate your memory with faith,
O splendid and glorious Autonomus,
You were well-pleasing to the Holy Trinity.
Now the Church rejoices and sings praises to you.
Beseech Christ God to save our souls!

Hiermartyr Autonomus (September 12)

During the reign of Diocletian, Autonomus, a bishop in Italy, fled the persecutions to Bithynia. There he taught, converted, baptized many and built a church dedicated to Archangel Michael. Soon after, he left to preach in other cities as well. He destroyed the temples of idols through prayer. Some of Autonomos’ newly converted Christians smashed idols and destroyed a temple to show those gods powerless. To seek revenge, the pagans surrounded the Church of Archangel Michael when he was there and killed Autonomus at the altar. His body was buried there. The church was destroyed and many years later his incorrupt relics were discovered. Many miracles and healings were caused by his relics.
