for September...
September 7 (Matthew 19:16-26)
At that time a certain young man came to Jesus and said, “Good Master, what good work shall I do to have eternal life?” He said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God. But if you will enter into life, keep the commandments.” He said to Him, “Which?” And Jesus answered, “Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness, honor thy father and mother, and, thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” The young man said to Him, “All these I have kept; what is still lacking in me?” Jesus said to him, “If you will be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” But when the young man heard these words, he went away sad, for he had great possessions. But Jesus said to His disciples, “Amen I say to you, with difficulty will a rich man enter the kingdom of heaven. And further I say to you it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.” The disciples, hearing this, were exceedingly astonished, and said, “Who then can be saved:” And looking upon them, Jesus said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
September 14 (John 19:6-11; 13-20; 25-35)
At that time the chief priests and the elders took counsel among themselves against Jesus to put Him to death. And they went to Pilate saying, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.” The Jews answered him, “We have a Law, and according to that Law He must die, because He has made Himself Son of God.” Now when Pilate heard this statement, he feared the more. And he again went back into the praetorium, and asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. Pilate therefore said to Him, “Will you not speak to me? Do you not know I have power to release you?” Jesus answered, “You would have no power at all over me were it not given you from above.” Pilate therefore, when he heard these words, brought Jesus outside, and sat down on the judgment seat, at a place called Lithostrotos, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. Now it was the Preparation Day for the Passover, about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold, your king!” But they cried out, “Away with Him! Away with Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” Then he handed Him over to them to be crucified. And so they took Jesus and led Him away. And bearing the cross for Himself, He went forth to the place called the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and with Him two others, one on each side and Jesus in the center. And Pilate also wrote an inscription and had it put on the cross. And there was written, JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Many of the Jews therefore read this inscription, because the placed where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Greek and in Latin. Now there were standing by the cross of Jesus His mother and His mother’s sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus, therefore, saw His mother and the disciple He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. After this, Jesus, knowing all things were now accomplished, bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. The Jews therefore, since it was the Preparation Day, in order that the bodies might not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a solemn day), asked Pilate that their legs be broken, and that they be taken away. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other, who had been crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw He was already dead, they did not break His legs; but one of the soldiers opened His side with a lance, and immediately there came out blood and water. And the one who saw it has borne witness, and his witness is true.
September 21 (Matthew 22:2-14)
The Lord told this parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who made a marriage feast for his son. And he sent his servants to call in those invited to the marriage feast, but they would not come. Again he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatlings are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.’ But they made light of it, and went off, one to his own farm, and another to his business; and the rest laid hold of his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. But when the king heard of it, he was angry; and he sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The marriage feast indeed is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy; go therefore to the crossroads, and invite to the marriage feast whomever you shall find.’ And his servants went out into the roads and gathered all those they found, both good and bad; and the marriage feast was filled with guests. Now the king went in to see the guests, and he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment. And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ But he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind his hands and feet, take hold of him, and throw him out into the darkness, where there will be weeping and the gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called but few are chosen.”
September 28 (Luke 5:1-11)
At that time Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. And He saw two boats moored by the lake, but the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. And getting into one of the boats, the one that was Simon’s, He asked him to put out a little from the land. And sitting down, He began to teach the crowds from the boat. But when He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep, and lower your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, the whole night through we have toiled and have taken nothing; but at your word I will lower the net.” And when they had done so, they caught a great number of fishes, but their net was breaking. And they called to their comrades in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord,” For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish they had made; and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you shall catch men.” And when they had brought their boats to land, they left all and followed Him.
