Happy Birthday Helen Kurnewitz......

The Feast of the Holy Theophany (Epiphany) of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ was worshiped on Sunday, January 6. The Bible records that the Spirit descended like a dove and alighted on Christ, and when this happened, a voice came from heaven and said, “This is my Beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” We sang, “Today Thou hast appeared to the universe, and Thy light, O Lord, has shown on us, who with understanding praise Thee; Thou hast come and revealed Thyself, O Light Unapproachable!”

Following Divine Liturgy, we took this opportunity to honor our long time, devoted parishioner, Helen Kurnewitz, who turned 100 on Friday, January 4. She received an Icon of St. Helena with St. Constantine and a bouquet of roses. A molieben was offered on her behalf. In this case, an overused phrase, “Words fail” is appropriate to describe Helen. She was a passionate, dedicated, hard-working member of St. John’s until her health prohibited her from church activity recently. Helen is wise, quick witted and a joy to be with. All of us at St. John’s wish her a happy birthday, good health, and, may God grant her Many Years!  Pictures are in the Photo Gallery.

Akathist to the Divine Passion & Panikhida for the Departed

Ikos 4:  Having heard Thy meek and gentle words, Pilate delivered Thee up to be crucified as deserving death, even though he himself bore witness that he had found not a single fault in Thee. Then he washed his hands, but defiled his heart.
